04: ICT to support curriculum standards

Curriculum documents now identify skills and knowledge sets that are in addition to the specific confines of particular subjects or learning areas. One of these skills is ICT literacy but there are numerous others too. It's time to take a deeper look at how ICT can support the curriculum and the delivery of skills necessary to function in the 21st century.

On completion of this unit participants will be able to:

  1. Investigate and source digital versions of curriculum documents from the national education authority's website
  2. Determine what role for ICT has been envisaged by the national education authority as expressed within the official curriculum
  3. Identify sixteen 21st century skills as defined by the World Economic Forum
  4. Integrate at least two 21st century skills into their teaching and learning.

  3. Zestien21st century skills identificeren zoals gedefinieerd door het World Economic Forum.
  4. Ten minste twee21e eeuwse vaardigheden integreren in hun onderwijs en leren.

Calculations on motion in one dimension

In this unit you will apply your understanding of the components of motion in one dimension using linear equations. This will help you to solve problems about motion in one direction and equip you to understand how these concepts apply to everyday life.

There are three equations for linear motion with constant acceleration. They can be used to calculate, and therefore predict, the outcome of motion when three out of the four variables are known.

The concept of mechanical advantage

The amount of effort saved when using machines is called mechanical advantage (MA). Simple machines use mechanical advantage as a key property to their functionality, helping humans perform tasks that would require more force than a person could produce. We will use the lever as an example of a simple machine to illustrate the concept of mechanical advantage.

Current Electricity

In this lesson you will learn that:

  • Circuit diagrams are used to show how electrical components are connected in a circuit.
  • Individual circuit components are represented using circuit symbols.
  • Current is the flow of electrons around a circuit.
  • Ammeters are used to measure the current flowing through components.
  • Components in a circuit resist current flow.
  • Voltmeters are used to measure the potential difference across components.
